January 17, 2010: Lonely Horse

While photographing a covered bridge in PA, I noticed this horse in an adjacent field. He looked a little lonely...

December 23, 2009: Migration

If you watched Planet Earth, you may remember the segment about Snow Geese and how they migrate every year from the Gulf of Mexico to the Arctic tundra. They travel en masse and are truly a sight to behold.

I'm fortunate enough to live in an area where the snow geese make a pit stop on their way north. Local farmers consider them a nuisance but I think they're lovely:

That isn't quite as impressive as it could be if there were no snow on the ground... but hopefully you can see that there are hundreds of birds in that field! (Click to enlarge.) When I pulled over closer to take another picture, it spooked them and they took off.

If it looks impressive... well, you should have heard it! The sound of so many wings flapping was amazing.

January 8, 2010: Icicles Gleaming

Even though it's been unbearably cold here for the past few weeks, there's been some pretty scenery to look at. I loved the way the sun lit up these icicles on a gazebo.

Life & Laughter

I've had a lot of things hitting me all at once in the last few weeks. My aunt passed away, my dad became a hospice home care patient, and life has just been all around difficult. I'm now responsible for buying two sets of groceries (for our house and my dad's house) and keeping three sets of books (ours, my dad's, and the Girl Scouts troop's). I can't even tell you how long it's been since I last mopped my kitchen floor. Or dusted. Or changed the sheets.

In the midst of all the turmoil, I came home one day and found this cute flower thing on my doorstep:

A good friend had left her for me, with a note "Thought you could use a smile." I sure could, and this sure did give me one. Thanks Lisa!

October 19: In Miniature

My mom, my daughter and I went to see a small exhibit of miniature houses at the local university. This was one of the most unusual pieces there -- a lamp with a miniature as its base! The room portrays the artist's vision of what Sherlock Holmes' house might have looked like.

October 7, 2009: Corn at Dusk

Our church had a family night at a local farm/pumpkin patch. DH, DD and I went through the corn maze at dusk. The corn made a lovely silhouette against the colorful sky.
